The indoor track is from December to March and provides a brilliant opportunity to build sprint and middle distance speed and get an introduction to different field sports. Some of the athletes that may not have done as well in Cross Country may be surprised to find they excel at one or other of these events as they often require different muscles, techniques and skills.
Our youngest athletes will run 🏃 in the 300m, sprint the 60m and test their jumping abilities in the long jump. As they get older the distance will go from 300m to 500m/600m and up to 800m and 1500m for our teenage athletes. Other events such as hurdles, triple jump, shot put and high jump will be introduced as the athletes get older.
The Clare and Munster events are normally held in February/March 🥶 in the Nenagh indoor track and the club usually runs training sessions there in January to get athletes used to this track. All of our athletes can compete in the Clare events and we would recommend any athletes that have done well in Clare events to participate in the Munster events. The rest of the training is completed in Lee’s Road. As athletes get older they can also compete at National level 💫 and these events are normally held in the National Arena in Dublin or the excellent indoor track at TUS in Athlone. These events often include many Irish Olympic track stars and are also normally filmed and available to watch.
The indoor track season also has 4x200m relay events, which are great fun and our athletes will be introduced to and practice the skills for this during training.
Indoor track is often the highlight of the year for many of our young athletes 🥰 as they start to get used to the different exercises and skills required for athletics.
